Forgotten Lands

Mission Statement

Following a year filled with unprecedented change, the 2017 hurricane season unveiled a new political storm encompassing every issue from race, socio-political inequality to climate change.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria were the biggest storms we have seen in an unprecedented back-to-back path of destruction.

The Caribbean, typically seen under the guise of pristine beaches and vacationing, is a place of rich culture and Pre-Columbian history with unique art, music, food, and fashion that varies from island to island.

Despite the differences in cultural background, an unwritten unity exists across the islands. In this time of crisis, we need to call on this unity to help those who are not receiving the aid they so desperately need.

In an effort to raise funds and draw attention to the crisis still at hand, Forgotten Lands, features the works of emerging and established Caribbean artists from Jamaica, Virgin Islands, St. Croix, Puerto Rico and Mainland USA who have a strong connection to or currently reside in the West Indies.  This diverse group of artists reflects the environmental, political and socio-cultural diversity present across the regions.
This region is made up of a resilient people who stop at nothing to provide help to those in need in their neighboring islands.  Much like the example set by our relatives, friends, and families affected, we want to present this exhibit as our effort to help.

The proceeds of the exhibition will benefit the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico Community Art Relief Program and the St. Croix Foundation for Community Development.

Despite the difference in cultural background, an unwritten unity amongst the islands exists. In times of crisis, all hands need to be on deck to help the ones who cannot help themselves - we ask now for action to help the southern neighbors who have been forgotten in the shadows of this year’s events.
