Artist Ricardo Miguel Hernández was born and raised in Cuba and his work lies somewhere between conceptual and documentary. He’s worked with photography for the past twenty years and strongly prefers still images. Specifically, collage has become the medium through which Hernandez transforms archives into new works.
“I am a memory researcher. My work exists within the authenticity and the ambiguity of historical memory through different aesthetic exercises such as photography and video. I distance myself from the original document to turn it into a new artistic construct, a new historical memory.”
Hernandez studied at the Cátedra Arte de Conducta created and directed by Tania Bruguera. He has exhibited in several solo exhibitions in countries like Italy and Cuba. His most recent exhibitions include the Contemporary Art Center M17 in Kyiv, Ukraine, the Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Florida, and Photo España in Madrid, Spain.
